Roberto Matta was one of the most influential figures of Surrealism and a key reference point in 20th-century art. Born in Santiago, Chile in 1911, he developed a body of work that combined abstraction, architecture, science, and psychological exploration, creating visual universes charged with movement, energy, and tension.
After studying architecture in Chile, he moved to Paris in the 1930s, where he became involved with artists and intellectuals of the Surrealist movement, such as André Breton, Salvador Dalí, and Marcel Duchamp. It was in this context that he began to develop his own artistic language, focused on representing mental states, imaginary spaces, and the invisible forces that permeate human experience.
His paintings are characterized by fluid atmospheres, organic structures, and dynamic compositions that defy traditional perspective. Through abstract forms and almost cosmic settings, Matta explored the subconscious and the complexity of perception. Later, his work incorporated political and social references, especially in response to the conflicts and transformations of the 20th century.
Roberto Matta's work has been exhibited internationally for over six decades and today occupies a fundamental place within the history of modern and contemporary art.
