James Mathison is a contemporary Venezuelan sculptor born in Caracas in 1966. He is best known for his figurative sculpture work in which the human body is the central focus of his artistic production. Although he initially studied Law, he later trained in advanced casting and sculpture techniques at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London, which marked the beginning of his professional art career.

His work is characterized by a high degree of anatomical precision and the use of materials such as bronze and resin. Mathison often fragments or reconstructs parts of the human body—not only as an aesthetic choice but as a way to reflect on identity, memory, and the traces left by the passage of time in human experience. His sculptures combine realism with deep conceptual significance.

Throughout his career he has exhibited in various cities and international art fairs, and his pieces are included in private collections, museums, and public spaces. Mathison has lived and worked in Madrid since 2018, where he maintains his studio and continues to develop work centered on the human figure as a symbol of transformation, vulnerability, and permanence.
